Men of Action: Argus Cycle Tour 2012, Cape Town

This Sunday is the annual Argus Cycle Race, taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.

This is a unique opportunity for cycles to come together and challenge themselves to compete in one f the world's largest sporting events. 31,000 cyclists are expected to take part and will each challenge themselves to finish the 109km which will take them through some of the Cape's most mesmerising scenery.

People from all walks of life have been training hard for the race. Each face is there for their own reasons, whether its for the exhilaration of the competition, a personal challenge, or to raise awareness for a cause close to their hearts.

Rick Lawrence's team, 'Race for Rhinos' is taking action to raise money for the protection of rhinos from poaching in South Africa:

'Our bikes will be decorated and our tops will make us recognisable as the Race for the Rhino team. We have targeted finishing the race inside five hours and hope that people recognise the efforts of the riders and that give generously to this cause

They have already received a great deal of support from local businesses and have choses the Argus race as a springboard for growing support for the charity. Their project seeks to grow a sustainable habitat, where the critically endangered Black Rhino in KwaZulu-Natal, a province of South Africa. In this habitat, the animals will be able to roam freely and grow their numbers in safety.

They will make up a significant portion of the race competitors, as Lawrence outlines:

'We have a team of 50 cyclists competing in the 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, who are all riding to raise funds and try and make a difference'

Another competitor is Helen Harder, who is battling cancer. She was diagnosed in February 2011 and at last year's Argus Cycle Tour her boyfriend, Alwyn Badenhorst completed the race in honour of her. This year, she is planning to complete it with him.

'I want to raise awareness, but also show the people what one can do while getting chemo... accept the challenges you get in your life and face them. That's what I'm doing'

Really inspiring. The Argus Cycle Tour is not just an environment to raise awareness, but also to test oneself. Although she's nervous, Helen is going into the race with a positive attitude:

'You have to react and adapt'

If you want to see the race route, a collaborative project has produced a video that take you along the route in just under ten minutes.

Made by Game On and Rockets Compression Sportswear, both based in South Africa, the video was made by driving the entire Argus Route and then editing the clip to speed up the footage. The route looks tough, but we're sure the atmosphere will be buzzing on March 11th when the competitors cycle the 109km route and wish them all the best of luck!

Modern Day Herald: Remembering Rémi Ochlik

Over the past week, many words have been attributed to Rémi Ochlik, the French photographer who died in a Syrian bombing. Perfectionist. Cool-headed guy. Hero. But Bruno Stevens, one of Rémi's colleagues prefers the word 'Herald':

'I use the word in the etymological and historical sense of "herald": a man of great value in charge of conveying the most important messages of his time'

And that he did. Ochlik was truly a Man of Action, and sought out modern front lines to capture the attrocities and injustices that take place beyond our television screens. If his associate Marie Colvin gave the innocent a voice, Ochlik fought to give them a face. This face changed many times over his career, from rioting in Haiti to protesting in Libya, but the message remained constant: the struggle of the oppressed.

Rémi's commitment won him critical acclaim at this year's World Press Photo contest. His 'Battle for Libya' collection of photographs won the first prize in the General News category.

But there was no time for celebration and congratulations. This only spurred Rémi on to work harder and be better.

His friend at Paris Match remembers:

'He never celebrated. He left a few hours afterwards [for Syria]... he wasn't the kind of guy who would gloat for winning a prize. it was the kind of this that made him work harder'

Tragically, Rémi won't see the World Press awards ceremony in April, but we're sure he will be remembered and celebrated. Rémi was truly one of the most talented photojournalists around. Jean-François Leroy, the head of the major international photojournalism festival Visa Pour L'lmage remembers the exciting potential Rémi showed from the outset.

'Someone showed me this work on the events in Haiti. I was very beautiful, very strong. I didn't know the guy who'd done it. I asked him to come in. He's called Rémi Ochlik, he's 20. He worked alone, like a big guy. There you go. Photojournalism is not dead'

He invigorated the industry, breaking new frontiers and exposing brutally real images. But this fire will not burn out, as Bruno Stevens concludes his tribute:

Giving a Voice to the Voiceless: Remembering Marie Colvin

Today we honour the courageous Marie Colvin, a front line journalist who was impassioned to bring truth to readers around the world. She was recently killed while reporting on the crisis in Syria when her building was bombed. She died alongside French photographer Rémi Ochlik, who was on hand to document images of the conflict.

No stranger to the intense demands of the front line, Marie placed herself in incredible to danger in order to fulfil a personal goal of hers. In 2001, while reporting on the conflict between government forces and rebel Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, Marie lost the sight in her left eye following an attack.

This was a time for her to reflect on the choices she was making. Undeterred, she continued to commit herself to her life's work.

'My job is to bear witness. I have never been interested in knowing what make of plane had just bombed a village or whether the artillery that fired at it was 120mm or 155mm'

For Marie, conflict was a human story, rather than a political or religious one. And it had human consequences.

'These are people who have no voice. I feel I have a moral responsibility towards them, that it would be cowardly to ignore them. If journalists have a chance to save their lives, they should do so'

Although her words resonated across the world, and her style became synonymous with the truth, Marie was someone who took action. Fearless and heroic, she judged the impact of conflict on innocents to be unfair. In 1999, while reporting in East Timor, she refused to leave a besieged compound which was being attacked by Indonesian-backed forces. The compound had 1,500 women and children inside - innocents who could not be ignored. Marie stayed with an unarmed UN force, and reported her experiences to the world. With the global community watching the events unfold, she was able to help secure evacuation of all 1,500 people after a tumultuous four days.

'If there is a scale of courage, Marie was at the top of it. Because she knew the reality of war, and there are no guardian angels... her coverage was the bravado of the foolhardy who imagine themselves invulnerable'

'It was the quiet determination of someone who had to do what she believed she was for; knowing the risks and possible consequences. To tell the story and give a voice to the voiceless'

We thank her for humanising the news. We remember for her courage. We celebrate her for her action.

We've secretly got our fingers crossed that this will be George Clooney's year to take home the prestigious statuette. This is Clooney's third oscar nomination fro Best Actor, but although he's still at the top of his game both behind and in front of the camera, he's never taken the award home.

You can see the full list of awards nominations over at the Oscars website. It's certainly shaped up to be an excellent 12 months for cinema, which will be celebrated this weekend. However this one goes, congratulations to all the nominees.

Team of Heroines Cross the Atlantic in 45 Days

Julia Immonen decided it was time to take action. Shocked by the fact that human trafficking is still a global issue, she brought a team of five women together to raise money to help the modern day fight for Freedom For Everyone. At first, the all-female team elicited mixed responses:

'A lot of people thought, "these girls can talk the talk, but they have gone into this with rose-tinted glasses"' said Julia, who put together the team.

The director's assistant at Sky Sports News searched far and wide for a team to complete a 2,613 mile journey from the Canary Islands to Barbados. Her recruits came from all corners of the world, from Ireland to Dubai and barely knew each other when they took to the water. The team evolved into Row For Freedom, and raised money for two anti-trafficking charities - A21 Campaign and ECPAT UK.

'I felt such an urgency to do something. For a couple of months I was so frustrated as to what I could do to make a difference'

The team left the Canary Islands in December 2011 and were determined to prove they could walk the walk.

Their journey across the Atlantic was intense. Fittingly, the ladies chose a route that was used in the early slave trade and faced 50ft waves and were rowing 24 hours a day.

'We were up every two hours, so the sleep deprivation was hard and 3000 miles felt like an overwhelming distance, especially on a day when the water was like treacle and we might only to three miles'

'We were knocked off our feet by the waves all the time, but no one fell overboard. I can see them now, three swells of massive waves coming towards us. We never knew if they'd break over us or not'

Unpredictable weather conditions was not their only challenge. The auto helm, which helps steer the boat broke, and within days of setting off, their hydration equipment also broke which meant they had to spend up to 20 hours a day producing drinkable water with a hand pump.

But the ladies persevered, and relentlessly continued their trek to Barbados, never capsizing and appreciating both the peaks and troths of their adventure.

'We'd see the most breathtaking sunsets and sunrises or a shooting star at night and that would keep you going'

The ladies completed their challenge in 45 days, 15 hours, 26 minutes. Astonishing. But that wasn't all. Not only were they the first five woman team to cross the Atlantic, but also the fastest female team to do so.

'Getting the record was really amazing' explained the team captain Debbie Beadle. 'It was something we worked hard for and were really determined to achieve when we set out'.

Their story reminds us of The Wild Geese, who also faced testing seas to pursue their own sense of freedom. Like The Wild Geese, the Row For Freedom team also bonded on their adventure, and not only had to pull together to complete their challenge, but were also each others' support and safety nets.

Debbie Beadle admitted: 'We got to know each other very well'. Especially when the chaffing made their skin sore. At times, the women abandoned all modesty and rowed naked!

'We spent a lot of time rowing naked because when the sea water gets inside your clothes, it increases friction against your skin which can cause sores'

This camaraderie and the support network the women built up is incredibly inspiring. Two challenges faced the Row For Freedom team: the physical journey and the mental one. As they worked together as a team to defeat the physical challenge, they turned to one another like family to combat the mental one. We think of 1691, when The Wild Geese had to support each other as they journeyed to new lands. The support of a friend and comrade is priceless.

On reflection of the journey, Julia says:

'I'm just so thankful we got there and I wouldn't change the challenges we had. We learnt to embrace them - and there were so many'

Men of Action: Irish Man Steve Redmond One Stroke Closer to Completing Ocean's 7 Challenge

Irish man Steve Redmond is getting closer to becoming the first person to complete the tasking Ocean's 7 Challenge, which is the water equivalent of the Seven Summit challenge.

As one of the toughest swimming marathons, the Ocean's 7 has never been completed. It demands endurance and dedication, as well as a rare mental conditioning.

Competitors must swim:

- the North Channel (also known as the Irish Channel)

- Cook Strait, the stretch of water between the north and south islands of New Zealand

- Molokai Channel, Hawaii

- English Channel

- Catalina Channel, off the coast of California

- Tsugaru Strait, Japan

- Strait of Gibraltar

This means the Ocean's 7 provides various swimming conditions, from very cold to warm seas and strong currents to stiff winds. Theses conditions may also change depending on the time of year.

ENDURANCE

Like the Seven Summits challenge, the Ocean's 7 can take place over a number of years. Steve Redmond began his attempt in 2009, when he swam the English Channel. Next he tackled the North Channel, starting in Scotland and ending in Belfast harbour in 2010, and became only the second person to complete the 35km swim. Amazingly, he completed this on his first attempt!

Last Friday, Redmond got a little bit further to completing the Ocean's 7 challenge, by swimming the Cook Strait between New Zealand's north and south islands. Although he claims he had 'an awful lot of luck', theres clearly more to it than that.

A member if his support crew, Eoin Darby said:

'The last 900 metres he said he was nearly going backwards, the current was so strong'

'He could see dry land, but the rip current was so strong it pushed him back, he was basically going nowhere'

We can only imagine what this feels like. But, like The Wild Geese, endurance and dedication are parts of Redmond's character. All he needed was something to strive for - to keep his mental state as vigorous as his physical one.

For Patrick Sarsfield and The Wild Geese, this was the vision of Ireland. Their mutual love stayed with them and encouraged them through difficult times. For Redmond, he kept the thought of his two children with him with every stroke he took and focused on the autism centre in West cork, Ireland he is supporting.

But that didn't mean this swim was easy.

'Every time you stopped you could lose 10 metres' he explained. 'It took two hours to swim a kilometre and a half.. It beats you mentally and physically'.

COMMUNITY

Redmond's support team are essential parts of completion the Ocean's 7 Challenge.

'I really thought it was trying to kill me and did not like me... there's days when the water just doesn't like you and it can be a widowmaker'

'The people in the boat keep me alive, they're my life support and my emotional support'

He even had celebrated New Zealand ocean swimmer Phillip Rush travel alongside him in a boat, offering his support and expertise.

Steve's story is not just one of endurance, but also one of community. This was essential to The Wild Geese, who integrated with different communities across the world, while also letting their Irish culture flourish. In New Zealand, the local Irish community gathered on the beach to wish him well and helped Steve with his accommodation.

'It was quite humbling to have people like that help me. You come to Wellington and you feel like you've been here before. We're very lucky to have a group of Irish like that here'

Steve took just over twelve hours to complete the exhausting 26km swim, and averaged at 52 strokes a minute. Next on his agenda is the Molokai Channel in Hawaii and the Tsugaru Strait in Japan. Redmond certainly embodies the inspiring nature of The Wild Geese.

Irish Talent: The IFTA Awards, Showcasing Ireland

The Wild Geese story came alive last week at the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards ceremony. The awards are in their 9th year and Irish talent came out in Dublin to celebrate the growing Irish contribution to the film and television industry.

'The Irish Film & Television Awards is Ireland's showcase to the world of what our small but outstanding film and television community has to offer'

The Wild Geese were faced with a simple choice when they left Ireland: survive and prosper or submit to defeat. With the latter not being an option, they worked hard to achieve success. This is true of the IFTA awards, as many of the talent honoured have already made an incredible impact on Hollywood and British cinema, as well as in their native Ireland.

It's not surprise that everyone was talking about Michael Fassbender, who won the IFTW award for Best Actor in a Lead Role for Shame. This is the second time he has been honoured by this award. In 2008 he received it for his role in Hunger. On both of these films, Fassbender teamed up with Design come Director Steve McQueen. Clearly a winning duo. On their relationship, Steve McQueen says:

'It's beautiful. It's one of the most important relationships I've had in my life'

'We don't take our relationship for granted, at all, whatsoever... I think we both know, as well as a good friendship, this is a professional relationship where we have to bring our game'

For some, Fassbender's win will not be unexpected. This is his time. But, being honoured by your native country (Fassbender is half Irish, half German and lived in Ireland growing up) is both an exhilarating and humbling experience, one we have known very well recently. The Wild Geese Single Malt* was selected as one of Ireland's Reserve Cuvées last month. This is defined as a signature product of outstanding quality. This is extremely high praise coming from Ireland.

Glen Close won the award for Best International Actress for her role in Albert Nobbs. She fell in love with the story early in her career and worked hard to get it into production, financing a great deal of it herself. She worked with Irish Booker Prize winner John Banville on adapting the script.

'I loved my collaboration with John Banville. Whatever Irish tweaks we could make we did. It had to have wonderful Irish twists to things'

Men of Action: 'All In' At The Super Bowl

The confetti has settled, but after their 21-17 victory against the New England Patriots, the New York Giants have been reflecting on their turbulent season which ending in their second Super Bowl win.

On Tuesday 7th February the team celebrated their win with parade through New York City, ending at City Hall where Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave them the keys to the city.

'Two months ago the experts doubted the Giants would even make the play offs, but we're here today because the Giants believed in each other, and you believed in them'

The key to the Giants' progression this season has been two of the traits The Wild Geese used to survive and succeed - Team work and Commitment.

TEAM WORK

As they left Ireland, The Wild Geese were forced to depend on each other and this St Patrick's Day we will be celebrating the extraordinary successes that can be achieved when, like The Wild Geese and the Giants, people work together.

The Giants exemplify commitment and team work, and their coach Tom Coughlin is an important part of this. Coughlin has previously been viewed with mixed feelings. For some he was a 1950s style drill sergeant who had lost touch with the modern day NFC and NFL leagues. But this season he has disproved this, and on the contrary, has brought these key features to the forefront of his team. Jeff Freier writes, 'He's filled with class, dignity, ethics and morals. He's a gracious loser and is just as gracious when winning'.

Coughlin abandons all self satisfaction when it comes to the football field: 'I try to never put it in perspective for me. It's not about me. It's about our team'. But is quick to praise his team, who pulled together to get the ultimate result.

'They battled back, the way that they came together, the phrase they used was "All In" and they were all in'

COMMITMENT

With the sense of team work sown into them, the Giants just needed something to reach for and dared to dream about winning their second Super Bowl title. It was their commitment that propelled them to victory. MVP Eli Manning outlines the Giants' mindset:

'The message that's been talked about today is "Finish". Finish games, finish the fourth quarter and finish the season strong. That's exactly what we did - a team that had eight fourth-quarter wins, including one in the Super Bowl'

Coughlin shares this sentiment. It's important to stay committed to what you want to achieve.

'All things are possible for those who believe. We always believed, we always knew we could get here'

Men of Action: Coast to Coast Endurance Race 2012, Pt. 2

When we checked in on the Coast to Coast race on Friday, the competitors had just finished their first day. First time competitor Nathan Bell was leading the way and in close competition with Mark Beasley and Nathan Jones. As the first day drew to an end Nathan Bell only had a 50 second lead over Mark Beasley.

Although he suffered an injury during the first day, Nathan Bell stayed optimistic and focused on completing the challenge that still lay ahead: a 15km cycle, 67km kayak and a further 70km cycle.

'Today was my day. I'm just going to go out to enjoy myself tomorrow'

Nathan finished second overall with a time of 12:46:22 which is an incredible time for his first entry into the Coast to Coast race.

It was Nathan Jones who emerged as this weekend's Man of Action. Friday definitely belonged to Nathan Bell, but Saturday was Nathan Jones' day. As the day began he was nearly 7 minutes behind Bell, but overtook him to complete the endurance in 12:20:00.

Jones is familiar with the race and last year came 7th in last years notorious one-day challenge. But Jones wasn't going to enter this year's race, let alone win it. The tragedy of the recent earthquakes that have devastated Christchurch (which is where the race ends) has been difficult to get over.

'There was no way I could do the one-day and I wasn't going to race at all, but in early December I got the fever again I didn't want to miss out.'

This fever spread veraciously. Two months is not a lot of time to prepare for this level of endurance race and he tore a hamstring three weeks before the big event. But with everyone in Christchuch working hard to rebuild after the earthquake, Jones thinks this year's race has come at an important time.

'I do think you need some distractions and the people of Canterbury need to get back to a normal life if they're committed to staying here. It's been good to take my mind off of things, to get back in the hills and back to some normality'

Out of tragedy has come action and Jones' success in the Coast to Coast is a reflection of the motivation he has to rebuild his home county Canterbury. This was an important weekend on New Zealand's calendar. Regarded as one of the 'iconic' multi-sport endurance race, this year marked it's 30th anniversary. Although organisers were worried about a fall in competitors, as the country is working overtime to rebuild, it has proved to be one of the most exciting events in recent years. New faces have emerged and for New Zealand this has been a weekend to come together in commitment, determination and positive attitude.

'You wake up in the morning more tired than when you went to sleep,s o no one wants to go out for a run or a cycle. But it's a bit like this race - sometimes you just have to hang in there'

Men of Action: Coast To Coast Endurance Race 2012, Pt. 1

This years Coast to Coast endurance race has already gotten under way in New Zealand. Competitors have already completed the first day of the event, and left the New Zealand's west coast at 6am to face the first two segments of the challenge:

A 3km run and 55km cycle
The Mingha Deception Route Mountain Run, 33km

This is an internationally acclaimed adventure race and this year marks its 30th anniversary.

Leading the way in the men's group is 21 year old Nathan Bell. Amazingly this is his first attempt at the endurance race. His father has competed in the race before, however, Nathan only ventured in to adventure racing in summer 2011. For someone so new to the endurance sport, his excellent run over the Goat Pass where he overtook a dozen of his competitors is something to be admired.

Shockingly, Nathan stumbled on the mountain run, injuring himself, but in an example of a true Man of Action, he picked himself up and carried on. He's determined to finish his first race.

But the a race win is not guaranteed for Bell. The Coast to Coast challenge is notoriously unpredictable and Bell has lead very close lead of 50 seconds. His nearest competitor, Mark Beasley is hot on his trail and Nathan Jones is 6 minutes behind him.

As this year marks the 30th anniversary of the endurance race, the organiser, Robin Judkins, has invited veteran competitors of the race to join him at the finish line at Summer Beach. They are all convinced that the race is still just as challenging as the first one.

One of the pioneer women racers, Vivienne Prince has acknowledged 'it is still a challenge' and although the equipment has improved, 'rivers and mountains don't change'.

Legendary runner Steve Gurney, who has won the event a record 9 times, is at the event to celebrate. A familiar face in the endurance race, last year he partnered with the race organiser for the team competition.

This 30th anniversary is a perfect time for the next generation of adventure runners to make their names known.

Men of Action: 7 Marathons in 7 Countries in 4 Days

When an immigration officer at Sydney International Airport asked Richard Donovan if he had visited any other countries in the last six days, the response he got was extremely unexpected.

Richard had turned up in Australia to complete the final stretch of his World Marathon, which he had started only four days ago.

Beginning in -20C temperatures in the Antarctic, at the Russian Novo base. There he ran a 42km marathon, which was only the start of his epic journey. One he finished the first stretch, flew to Cape Town, South Africa to continue his World Marathon. Then on to Sao Paulo, Orlando in the USA, London in the UK, Hong Kong and finally arriving in Sydney.

Richard had run the World Marathon before, completing 7 marathons in 7 countries in 5 days, 10 hours and 8 minutes. Impressive as this is, he beat his own record when he completed his latest effort in Sydney.

Not only competing with the endurance needed to run a marathon, Richard also had to adapt to changing time zones and fluctuating temperatures. Fatigue was his major opponent, but Richard finished the challenge in 4 days, 22 hours and 3 minutes and had run a total of 183 miles.

An excellent story of endurance and commitment. Richard ran the marathon to highlight the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa and raise money for Irish-based charity organisation GOAL.

On this day over 100 years ago, one of The Wild Geese had arrived in the Antarctic and began an adventure that would define his career and place his name among the great veteran explorers of the polar regions.

A few weeks ago we explored Tom Crean's contribution to the Terra Nova Expedition (1910 - 1912), when he walked 35 miles in near white-out, freezing conditions to bring back help for his sick team mate Lt. Evans. It was during the Discovery Expedition, when this heroism started to show.

Tom Crean joined the Discovery Expedition in New Zealand, where the expedition's leader, Captain Robert Scott had docked his ship to fit his ship and replenish her crew. From the moment Crean joined the expedition, Scott was impressed, and as they set sail for the Antarctic the world was at Tom's feet.

Captain Scott remarked about Crean and his ship mate from the HMS Ringarooma: 'I like the look of these two... and think they will do well'

The Discovery arrived in the Antarctic on the 8th February 1902 and established a base at 'Hut Point'. From here the expedition collected scientific information. Tom Crean was mostly assigned to sledging journeys and set up depots for exploration of the polar region.

As the expedition continued, Crean grew to be a prominent member of the team. This was his first experience of the Antarctic, but the inhospitable conditions didn't phase him. Instead he got stuck in, spurred on by the hard work that was needed to survive in the region.

Sledging was the only method of transport across the land, and was extremely hard work. It demanded man-hauling equipment and supplies across the snow and ice in order to set up supply depots. During the entire exhibition, Crean sledged for a total of 149 days.

Although the Discovery expedition was relatively free from the tragedies of Terra Nova, Crean was faced with significant risk, especially since he was a novice.

'Crean fell [through the ice] twice yesterday and as he cannot swim had a fairly narrow shave on the last occasion. Luckily he kept still until a line could get to him'

It was Crean's healthy attitude which ensured he adapted to the harsh environment and was valued by the team. Albert Armitage wrote:

'Crean was an Irishman with a fund of wit and an even temper which nothing disturbed'

In the winter of 1902, the Discovery had become locked in the ice. Trapped, some of the expedition members left on board a relief ship, but Crean opted to stay and help free the ship. In February 1904, the ship was freed.

Like the original Wild Geese, Crean had an intrepid spirit. He journeyed to the Antarctic, and despite the dangerous environment he found himself in, became an incredibly important member of the team. He found his feet during the Discovery expedition and adapted to the hard work very well. So much so, that Captain Scott chose him for his next expedition - the Terra Nova - when he would prove himself in a dramatic life or death situation.

Upon his return to Europe, he received a Silver Medal from the Royal Geographical Society for his contribution to the Discovery expedition. Clemants Markham noted Crean as:

'An excellent man, tall with a profile like the Duke of Wellington, universally liked'

Crean's story reflects that of the original Wild Geese, who braved new environments to be successful. Like The Wild Geese in 1691, Tom Crean's adventure was only just beginning. He was soon to become a veteran of the Antarctic and a hero.

Men of Action: New York Giants Victory at Super Bowl XLVI

The New York Giants proved that history does indeed repeat itself this past Sunday, when they ended this year's Super Bowl with a victory over the New England Patriots.

Giants 21 - 17 Patriots

The game's MVP - Eli Manning - gave a flawless performance, which 'approached perfection' and saw a final quarter that secured the Giants' second Super Bowl win against the Patriots.

But this was a team game, as the MVP points out:

'This isn't about one person. This is about a team coming together, getting this win. I'm just proud of our guys, proud of the team and how we fought all year. Never discouraged, kept their fair and kept their confidence and just fought to the very end'

Another reminder of how important team work is. But a team also needs a strong leader. Irish American Giants' coach, Tom Coughlin brought the team together Saturday night. He showed them a highlight reel of their season so far, and inspired them with a rousing speech, which got the team all fired up for their showdown on Sunday.

'It was very passionate. It was hard to go to sleep after a speech like that... You could tell it was from the heart'

His speech was one that could have come straight from 1691, and could be directed at The Wild Geese. Coughlin says:

'We just kept pounding away on those themes - persevere until victory is ours, you got to believe, all things are possible for those who believe. We never changed our approach, never changed our style'

This message is timeless, and this past weekend, propelled the Giants to victory once again.

Super Bowl XLVI: Team Spirit

We're only a few days away from the Super Bowl, when the New York Giants will meet the New England Patriots. Each team has a huge Irish American following and this will be a game that we're sure Wild Geese will be tuning in to.

Over the past week, the Super Bowl adverts have been airing on TV and the excitement is already starting to build.

The Giants and Patriots have faced off at the 2008 Superbowl, when the Giants 17-14. So all eyes will be locked to the screen to see how this year's Superbowl turns out.

Although the excitement is searing through the US, Tom Brady must feel like the world is on his shoulders, as he was on the field at Superbowl XLII as well. This will be Brady's fifth start as quarterback and has worked with New England Coach Bill Belichick for twelve years!

Speaking about their relationship that has lasted over a decade, Brady describes Belichick:

'He coaches me the same way that he coached me the day I got here. On our team, it's interesting, there really is no separate treatment for different players. The rookies are expected to perform and act the same as the veteran guys. He's very tough'

It's a clear bet that the team will be heading in to Sunday's game prepared. With the team training as equals, keeps them moving in the same direction. Although Brady attracts countless media attention, on the field, he's part of the team - one of eleven.

Like The Wild Geese, the Patriots will need to depend on each other in order to achieve success. Patriots offensive lineman, Brian Waters puts this into perspective:

'To have a coach set the tone and a player as good as Tom follow that, it's hard for any other player to even think about having a different thought process. If the best player on your team is all-in 100% then who are you to be different?'

Although they're not quite fighting to survive and succeed, this is what the mind set of The Wild Geese was - working together and giving 100%.

In the last few days, Tom Brady's wife, the glamourous Gisele Bündchen has been rallying support for her husband and his team:

'Sunday will be a really important day in my husband's life... and now they need us more than ever to send them positive energy so they can fulfil their dream of winning this Super Bowl'

And that's exactly what Wild Geese are doing according to Connell Gallagher, publisher of the Irish Emigrant newspaper in Boston:

'It's fair to say that there's true pride and loyal support for the Patriots here in Boston'

Amy Purdy: Getting Creative

There is an inspiring story we want to share today - the life and career of Amy Purdy.

As a young girl, Amy had dreamed of escaping her home town and settling in a location that suited her best - a snowy environment. There she worked as a massage therapist and enjoyed snowboarding. She had taken control of the direction her life was heading in. She asked herself 'If my life was a book, and I am the author - how would I want my story to go'.

'For the first time in my life I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life. That is, until my life took a detour...'

Amy reminds us that life can take a drastic and unexpected turn. At the age of 19, Amy fell ill. She first thought that her illness was a flu virus, but within 24 hours of this, she found herself in intensive care. She had contracted Neisseria Meningitis, which attacked her blood and affected her circulatory system. She laid in a hospital bed with a less than 2% chance of survival. In a matter of moments, her life that she had worked so hard for was disappearing.

The road to recovery was bumpy, and her spleen had to be removed, she needed a kidney transplant and both her legs had to by amputated below the knee.

But Amy started to focus on what she used to love, and began training to snowboard once again.

'I learned that our boarders and obstacles only do two things: stop us in our tracks, or force us to get creative'

And Amy did get creative. Her original prosthetic legs were not flexible enough for her to snowboard. Determined to see this as an opportunity, she worked with professionals to design prosthetics that would help her snowboard. Catered to her own design, Amy was taking to the slopes once again and had retained that sense of freedom she had enjoyed before her tragedy struck.

Amy has since competed in snowboarding competitions, coming third in a contest a year after her amputation. She also returned to her profession as a massage therapist and now acts a spokesperson for The Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps and encourages people with disabilities to train for activities they love.

Amy story is one of courage, determination and inspiration. It's difficult to imagine the tragedy that befell her, when all your hard work is snapped away from you. But Amy exemplifies that our lives are not predetermined, and even in the face of adversity we can achieve the extraordinary.

59 Days: Walking Solo Across Antarctica

Last week Felicity Aston successfully crossed 1,084 miles of Antarctica. She started out from the Leveratt Glacier on November 25 2011, and arrived at Hercules Inlet on January 23rd.

This included the laborious task of walking the distance in skis, dragging two sledges of food and fuel and navigating crevasses and uneven terrain. Not only did Felicity accomplish this three days before she was expecting to finish, but she did this alone. 59 days of solitude was Felicity's a major challenge. Although support was nearby and she received two supply drops during her journey, her only company was the sun and the featureless landscape that laid a head of her.

But Felicity stayed focused, even when she thought she wouldn't make it.

'It's quite stressful. It was just a matter of every single day, looking at my kit, and thinking what could go wrong here and that can I do to prevent it?'

'All these days I thought there was no chance I was going to make it in time to make that last flight off Antarctica, and yet here I am with three days to spare'

In the face of adversity, she showed courage.

'If you can just find a way to keep going, either metaphorically or literally, whether you're running a marathon or facing financial problems or have bad news to deliver or it's tough at work or whatever, if you can just find a way to keep going, then you will discover that you have potential within yourself tat you never never realised'

In the harsh conditions of Antarctica, perseverance is absolutely necessary. Felicity kept going and reached her destination three days early, becoming the first woman to travel solo across Antarctica.

'I think we all have within us this ability to keep going. No matter what it takes, just keep going. Even if it means crying. If you can just manage that perseverance, it's amazing what we can achieve'

This is the story of The Wild Geese. They shared this unique ability to keep going.

Felicity made the flight out of Antarctica with time to spare, and will be returning to her home in the UK this week. While it may take some time to adjust to normal life again, we're sure she'll enjoy her time reflecting on this remarkable feat.

Men of Action: Reflecting on The Coast to Coast Race

The story of The Wild Geese has lived on through the ages. The faces may change, but the principals remain the same. Adventure. Survival. Achievement. In adversity they showed courage.

Steve Gurney is a modern day example of this. The adventurer has been competing in races for over twenty years and has become a familiar face at New Zealand's annual Coast to Coast Race.

Held every February, the Coast to Coast race demands a lot from it's competitors, who must traverse many different terrains from the West Coast to the East Coast of South Island. To do this, competitors must run cycle and kayak. The entire contest is 243 km (151 miles).

At 48, Steve Gurney has taken part in the race a staggering 18 times - and has won a record 9 times! So he is somewhat of an expert on the race. As he explains what has prompted him to keep going back for more, we can't help but visualise The Wild Geese when they left Ireland in 1691:

'I was immediately drawn to it. Humans, and especially males, are inescapably drawn to adventure. The Coast to Coast has provided an outlet for that... I loved the concept of being personally self-responsible'

This is a testament to a modern day chapter of the story of The Wild Geese. These Men of Action were put in a dangerous situation, and decided to leave their homeland. But their taste for adventure propelled them to new worlds, but their skills and determination were the only tools they needed to prosper so far from home. This sentiment is still shared with adventurers today. Gurney enjoys something to strive for, which has resulted in a record setting 9 wins in the Coast to Coast race:

'I liked challenging myself, coming close to death sometimes, and being caght out in bad weather. because I was clever, skilled and had done the training, I survived'

Although safety checks are in place, and adventurers today are much better prepared, endurance racing still holds its own dangers, and it is a mental commitment, as well as a physical one.

'Adventure racing throws obstacles at you all the time and the team that deals with the obstacles best wins'

Steve has taken his ambitions and passion he injects into the Coast to Coast race and built a career out of them. He now works as a motivational public speaker.

'It's part of my life. Not a day goes by when I don't get an email or phone call from someone asking for advice...I chose to make my job out of this lifestyle. The Coast to Coast is an important part of it'

With this year's Coast to Coast fast approaching, ambitious participants will most likely be completing their final training programmes in preparation for the big two day event. It's good to know that modern day Men of Action are continuing to achieve remarkable things.

Superbowl XLVI: Patriots vs Giants

Superbowl XLVI is set for February 5th. Game by game, teams have dropped out of the running to take centre stage at one of the world's biggest sporting events, leaving tow colossus teams to face off. Echoing the match up at Superbowl XLII in 2008, The New England Patriots will meet The New York Giants.

Both head coaches (Tom Coughlin, Giants and Bill Belichick, Patriots) and quarterbacks (Eli Manning, Giants and Tom Brady, Patriots) will return from Superbowl XLII and will meet each other once again on February 5th.

At Superbowl XLII the Giants beat the Patriots 17 - 14, and it is widely known that the thought of the 2008 results still stings Tom Brady. So expect emotions to be high, as many sports writers are already billing this year's final as Brady vs Manning.

It was Tom Brady's touchdown in the Patriot's game against the Baltimore Ravens on 22nd January, which you can see below.

The Irish American has been reflective on the season up to this point. Thought of as underdogs by many critics, the Patriots are heading into the final with equal measures of preparation and eagerness.

'We've been in a lot of tough games all year. Some balls have bounced our way. Yousee the same thing from the Giants. They barely got into post season, and now look at them. They're playing their best football'

This is sure to be an exciting final for Wild Geese all over the world. Boston and New York each have very strong Irish communities, bot of which will surely be out in force supporting their respective teams.

Men of Action: Walking 2,500 miles across America

Adventure is a substantial part of the story of The Wild Geese. Although The Wild Geese showed courage in the face of tremendous adversity, they also displayed a thirst for adventure. This took them to new frontiers. It presented them with new experiences.

This is exactly what prompted a St. Louis, Missouri native to walk 2,500 miles across the USA. Anthony Lambing set off from Charleston, South Carolina on the 8th August 2011 and ended his walk a few days ago in Del Mar, California on 20th January 2012. This five month trek was a call to adventure, to quench the 26 year-old's thirst to see something new.

Lambing explained the genesis of this trek: 'The idea of travelling across America crossed my mind, and I just couldn't get it out of my head'.

'If you were to drive across America, you would just get off the highway for gas. But I got to see the places that you would only see if you lived there. Places that nobody would go except the locals'

One of the highlights of Lambing's trip was the generosity he came across when passing through towns and cities. Although he mostly camped or stayed with friends, every now and then the kindness of a local community was extended to him.

'The morning I'd be going into a town, I would call the City Hall and tell them what I was doing and ask if I could put up a tent overnight. A lot of the times, they would pick the fire department as a place to stay... One Town Hall directed me to a local who loved travellers, and a couple hooked me up with a free hotel room'

Anthony kept a record of his travels on his blog www.anthonywalksamerica.com so he could share his experience with his followers, including his mother who 'knew this was something he really wanted to do'.

Irish Talent: Two Door Cinema Club Announce New Album

Two Door Cinema Club have revealed they are working on a new album.

The Co. Down group first formed in 2007, and released their debut album, 'Tourist History' last year. The brought them huge success over 2011. With an ever-growing fan base they took to the stage at many festivals over the summer, not just in the UK and Ireland, but in North America as well. For many people all over the world, Two Door Cinema Club was the sound of the summer.

The band have channeled in some hip-hop influences into their upcoming album, which is expected to be released just in time for summer 2012. Alex Trimble, the band's singer suggested: 'All of us have been listening to quite a lot of hip-hop, the last year'.

But the band haven't abandoned their electro pop sound entirely, and this new project is much more about marrying the two styles. Alex continues: 'The hip-hop stuff is mostly in the drumbeats and basslines'

Its exciting to hear news of the evolution of the band. The Wild Geese kept their strong identity as they traversed the world, which is exactly what Two Door Cinema Club are doing.

When you put Sam's [lead guitar] guitar playing and me singing on top of that it becomes a Two Door hip-hop song rather than any other kind. Little pieces of everything are filtering their way in'

Two Door Cinema Club doesn't stand still. While working on their new album, they have also announced they will be headlining the 12-date NME Awards tour taking place throughout February.

Alex Trimble has said: 'We feel a real sense of achievement to have made it this far and be one among the incredible list of headliners on the NME Awards Tour'. But we have a feeling they're just getting started.

Men of Action: Tom Crean, Unsung Hero

On Friday we reported on the Antarctic team who had reached the South Pole just in time for the one hundred year anniversary of the Terra Nova expedition.

Captain Scott's expedition is a story of legend and tragedy. Although Scott's team reached the South Pole on 17th January 1912, they died on the return journey. This is a testament to the perils of the unpredictable environment. But there is an unsung story of heroism tied to the Terra Nova Expedition: Tom Crean's return journey.

Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Crean was already an experienced Antarctic explorer by the time of the Terra Nova Expedition, having explored the area four times before. Infamous for being a tough explorer, who had already worked hard to conquer the region, Captain Scott admired Crean and was one of the first men he invited to join the expedition.

However, after crossing the majority of the course, Captain Scott determined that only five men would continue on to the South Pole. 168 statute miles (270 km) from the Pole, Crean was told to turn back. Although this decision was made logically - based on the amount of rations and weight that could be carried - Crean wept at the prospect of leaving the expedition.

Captain Scott continued on with Edward Wilson, Lawrence Oates, Edgar Evans and Henry Robertson Bowers. As Scott's team they drew closer to the South Pole, Crean turned back with William Lashly and Lt. Teddy Evans. Crean was faced with a 750 mile trek which would make him the unsung hero of the Terra Nova Expedition.

On their way back, Crean's team lost their trail and were faced with a long detour around an icefall a plateau tumbled onto the glacier they needed to cross. With their food supplies short, this was turning into a race against time. But like The Wild Geese before him, Crean and his team showed courage in the face of this dreadful adversity. They decided to take control of their own fates and took to their sledge to slide 2000 feet to the glacier. Dodging crevasses and navigating uncontrollable surfaces, they safely reached the glacier. Their courage had paid off, but their journey was not over.

As they tried to navigate the glacier, Lt. Evans removed his goggles, trying to spot a way down. He was caught by a barrage of snow, partially blinding him. Crean and Lashly carried Evans across the glacier, resilient in the promise that they wouldn't leave him behind. However, as they continued on, Evans fell ill. Displaying symptoms of scurvy, his limbs were swollen and was in great pain. But Crean and Lashly carried on to the Corner Camp depot, where they were able to rest - 35 miles from where they wanted to be, at Hut Point.

While at the Corner Camp, Crean calculated what lay ahead for the remainder of the journey. Evans' condition meant four or five days of hauling, but the group only had three days food rations at most. Again showing the degree of courage that has become associated with the story of The Wild Geese, Crean continued on alone, in an attempt to fetch help. With a few chocolate bars and biscuits to fuel him, he powered across the remainder of the Antarctic. Knowing how unforgiving this environment could be, he travelled the 35 miles in 18 hours, avoiding a deadly blizzard that would have killed him.

Crean's resilience and courage saved Lashly and Evans. A rescue team were able to set off and bring them back to Hut Point. He received the Albert Medal at Buckingham Palace on his return to England, but mourned the loss of his good friend Captain Scott.

Men of Action: Marking the 100th Anniversary of Terra Nova

This week is the anniversary of the Terra Nova Expedition, when Captain Robert Falcon Scott lead a team to the South Pole. They reached the South Pole on 17th January 1912, and although they were beaten to the destination by a Norwegian team, their story has been well documented and surrounded by intrigue.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the expedition, and to mark it, a team lead by polar expert Richard Weber have followed in the wake of the Terra Nova team.

Starting in November, they travelled the 1242 miles across the Antarctic in near white-out conditions. They began about 900 km from the South Pole at the Ronne Ice Shelf and finished on Wednesday 18th January.

Through their endurance and commitment, the team have kept an important part of history alive and remind us all that Men of Action are still thriving today.

Dublin International Charity Bazaar

Its no surprise that Ireland is a very special place for The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey* and we're always really happy to support a worthy cause that helps the Irish people.

Back in November the Cuban Embassy in Dublin hosted the annual Dublin International Bazaar. This was held to raise money for six local charities and give a contribution to the Lord Mayor of Dublin's winter fuel fund.

Attended by 2641 people, the event was an astounding success, raising €56,635.55 for the following charities:

Irish Talent 2012: Michael Fassbender, 'Fearless'

All eyes are on Michael Fassbender. Now that the awards season has kicked off, the film industry is celebrating cinema in 2011. But we're also thinking about the year a head. And top of the list is Fassbender, who is tipped to be the leading man of 2012.

At 34, Fassbender has already enjoyed some career-shaping roles, which include the Byronic hero Mr Rochester in Jane Eyre and evolution of the villain Magneto in X-Men: First Class. He's already gone global, but the coming year will see Fassbender proving he's worth his salt by stepping into some challenging roles.

Shame

Fassbender re-teams with Director Steve McQueen (who he worked with in Hunger) and plays a sex addict struggling with his condition in New York City. This throws up a role which is sure to toy with his sanity, as his character's lifestyle is far from glamourous. He's caught in a cycle of sin and redemption but doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. Fassbender literally bears all - both physically and emotionally - and takes the audience to new depths.

His co-star, Carey Mulligan (who star is also rising in 2012) praises him:

'A lot of actors, especially when they are as talented and as good-looking as Michael, only want to play parts that show them in a good light. If I learned anything from working with Michael, it's that he is utterly fearless'

Haywire

In this government conspiracy action thriller, Fassbender takes a supporting role in a cast of 'the thinking man's Expendables', proving he can rub shoulders with Hollywood A-List. Next to the likes of Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum and Ewan McGregor, all eyes are still on Fassbender.

A Dangerous Method

Fassbender plays Carl Jung opposite Viggo Mortensen, who plays Sigmund Freud. The film explores the complex relationships between the two paragons of psychiatry. Biopics always get people talking, but this role plummets Fassbender into a darker look at the human mind, which crosses over with his performance in Shame.

Fassbender is certainly mastering his craft. But he's not just a leading man. He's a story-teller, and is able to deploy the strengths and weaknesses of the characters he plays, manipulating the audiences' empathy and encouraging them to see worlds they rarely know and experience things they never experience. as we head deeper into awards season and kick off 2012, all eyes are on Michael Fassbender.

Men of Action: The Final Frontier

Men of Action like The Wild Geese saw new frontiers on the horizon that beckoned to them. Space is widely thought of as 'the final frontier', but there are those among us who refuse to accept this definition. Instead of a culmination of human exploration, astronauts of all nationalities see this as an endless sea of possibilities.

One of NASA's most recent projects, Expedition 29 provided us regular earth dwellers with images of the frontier they had been exploring.

This image shows a Russian Soyuz capsule returning leaving the International Space Station, heading for earth. The capsule is the speck of light in the middle of the image, which was taken by Dan Burbank, who stayed on board the International Space Station.

This video shows the undocking of the capsule before the image was taken. Expedition 29 Commander Mike Fossum and Flight Engineers Satoshi Furukawa and Sergei Volkov each spent 167 days in space, working on the International Space Station. They returned to Earth on November 21st 2011, landing in Kazakhstan.

Courage, Belief and Dreams Realised in Dublin

Glenn Close has spearheaded a movie project that has been tied to her ambitions for close to 30 years. On the brink of release is Albert Nobbs, a film that is sure to challenge the role of gender in a person's character.

Based on the 1918 short story by George Moore, Albert Nobbs follows a woman who is going through life in 19th Century Ireland disguised as a man. As the story unravels, it becomes apparent that Albert is trapped in his own disguise.

An intriguing story to say the least. It is one that Glenn Close first encountered 29 years ago, when she won an Obie Award for an Off-Broadway performance of the story. Believing the performance would make a great movie, Close took command of the project. She has produced it, invested her own money, approached Rodrigo García to direct, assembled an energetic cast and shot the film on location in Dublin.

Men of Action: Rowing 3000 Miles Across the Atlantic

The Talisker Atlantic Challenge has come to an exciting close, with a world record being broken and a dramatic final sprint to the end.

The all-ametuer challenge is thought to be the world's toughest rowing race but Andrew Brown, from the UK, battled massive waves, salt rashes, blisters and cramps and arrived in Barbados after 40 days, 9 hours and 44 minutes at sea. He is now the fastest man to row solo across the Atlantic, which is no mean feat. According to the event organisers, more people have been into space than have rowed across the Atlantic.

But three miles ahead of him, were rowing duo Toby Illes and nick Moore. As Andrew raced to catch up with them, the contest suddenly had a dramatic final sprint to the finish. Although this turned out to be the 'closest finish' seen in an endurance contest like this, the rowing duo won the challenge.

Their time of 40 days, 9 hours, 15 minutes at seas meant they just missed out on breaking the world record for a pair rowing across the Atlantic.

After spending 40 days at sea and travelling 3000 miles, all the competitors must be commended for completing the contest.

Men of Action: Petr Pilat

A Czech stunt rider recently wowed crowds at Mexico's Vive Puebla Tournament. Petr Pilat powered his motocross up a ramp to back flip over an aeroplane, piloted by American Kirby Chambliss. The image below speaks for itself, but today we're taking a closer look at the Pilat, who has been intimately acquainted with motorcycles since he was 3 years old!

In 2001, at the age of only 10 years old, Pilat started experimenting with Freestyle Motorcross, which was still very new at the time, which more experienced riders were now attempted. But Pilat didn't want to be denied this new thrill, and worked hard to focus his skills. For him, this was a natural evolution of a passion that had started seven years earlier.

'As a kid there was nothing else than a motorcycle in the whole world for me, and if I look at it now, it has not really changed... I breathe for it'

At 14 years old, Pilat pulled off his first backflip on a motocross bike in the famous Sazka arena in Prague. As the youngest person to backflip a bike, he went straight into the Guiness World Records.

His commitment is undeniable. Like The Wild Geese, Pilat has pursued his dream, sometimes in the face of serious injury. After a stunt went badly wrong in 2004, Pilat was left in a coma and faced with the prospect of not riding again. But like The Wild Geese, who faced many hardships, Pilat was determined to carry on doing what he loved.

'I decided to fight big time and with the help of everyone who was with me, I got back on my feet. And after half a year, I even got back on my motorcycle'

Pilat's career has seen him competing in many major European competitions and his flame refuses to burn out.

'I am still serious about it. Every season, I am doing my best to pull out new tricks'

This was particularly true in 2009, when he performed the first tandem backflip - with the Mayor of Prague on the back of the bike! This innovation shows more than just commitment. Pilat wants to make his mark. He wants to redefine boundaries of what can be done on a motorcycle. He wants to mix his commitment with a sense of creativity. Considering his latest stunt, we're looking forward to seeing what he can do in the future.

Men of Action: 'It's Cool To Be Cool'

The term 'adventurer' may sometimes sound like an echo from the past. In a fast paced world where the internet can bring striking images to your living room 'frontiers can seem more akin to mythology rather than modern news items.

However, there are those amongst us who continue to seek out the frontiers that are not easily accessible. These Men of Action have the same drive as The Wild Geese, whose search for new frontiers started back in 1691.

Modern day adventurer Eric Larsen is driven by his intrigue of winter conditions and finding new frontiers. He admits '...there definitely is something about snow and winter that captured my imagination' which propels him to explore these conditions in their most extreme cases, and in his 15 years of adventuring Eric has explored the poles in -50 degree temperatures. Hi personal motto is 'it's cool to be cool'.

'I was fascinated by the idea of "North". To me, it seemed like one of the last real frontiers left on our planet. I really like the severity and isolation of these environments'

But during his expeditions, Larsen has seen the subject of his intrigue dramatically change. To raise awareness of the effects of global warming and help reshape attitudes to these extreme environments, he started the 'Save The Poles' project, a 365-day expedition. Beginning in November 2009, Larsen journeyed to the South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest (known as the Polar Trifecta), collecting scientific data and filming a documentary.

'Each leg posed unique problems - from extreme wind and cold in Antarctica to open water and moving ice in the Arctic to climbing in the death zone on Everest. In the end, there were so many obstacles and dangers that I was surprised I was able to pull it all off'

But he did and by the time he returned home in October 2010 he had gathered enough support to vigorously defend the regions he loves so much.

He has a busy 2012 lined up, with includes portraying his latest adventure into a documentary film and book and 'criss-crossing the continent for speaking engagements of all kinds' promoting how to tackle global warming.

Irish Talent in 2012: Rooney Mara

2012 is shaping up to be a very important year for Irish talent in Hollywood. There's a new wave of Irish talent that are being picked up by Hollywood.

First on our list is Rooney Mara, who's fiery turn in the US version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was a key attraction of the box office smash.

Mara fearlessly brought to life controversial character Lisbeth Salander, from the critically acclaimed 'Millennium series' by the late Stieg Larsson. For those of you familiar with the story, Lisbeth is a troubled young woman, but is so intriguing you're left wanting more from her. Mara certainly does her justice - filling the screen with intense emotion and a daunting feeling of unpredictability. She's certainly one of the most important characters of the naughties and after Mara's portrayal she'll be just as prominent during the next ten years.

Rooney Mara was certainly dedicated. After five screen tests, she was given two months to prepare for the role.

'I spent over a year at 100 miles per hour, just working on pure adrenaline for a lot of it. And it's hard to come down off of that. For someone like me, who really thrives off of having something to focus on, it's hard to lose that'

Rooney Mara was born in Bedford, New York and is of Italian and Irish descent. Her Irish ancestry is traced to Co. Down in Ireland and her paternal grandfather, Tim Rooney has run the Yonkers Raceway in Yonkers New York since 1972. Her great-grandfather, Art Rooney Sr. founded the professional football team the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When Wild Geese first landed on US shores they had to work hard, and strived for success. Rooney Mara's story is a true modern day example of the successes achieved by The Wild Geese.

Mara's commitment is undeniable. Her role in The Social Network proved to be a defining point in her career.

'It just felt different than anything else I had done. After that, I got really picky. I didn't work for a year. I didn't work until I got this part because I was just trying to find something that I was really passionate about'

This brought her to her turn as Lisbeth Salander.

'It was like I couldn't imagine what I would be doing if I wasn't doing that. I couldn't see forward in my life without doing it'

The second part of the 'Millennium series', The Girl Who Played With Fire has been confirmed, but we're hoping we'll get lucky and see Rooney Mara sink her teeth into more roles that will get people talking. One thing is for sure: she's only just getting started.

Surfing Without The Surfboard

We love reading about the innovative and ambitious - attributes shared with The Wild Geese all those years ago - and today we stumbled across this gem: Bodysurfing.

Simply put, this is surfing without the surf board. Instead, surfers equip themselves with specialised 'swimfins' which optimize propulsion and help to help direct the surfer. In the video below, Matt Larson shows us how its done.

We're sure this will push Men of Action to their limits. Over at Haraka Haraka Haina Baraka, Mark Lukach outlines just how challenging bodysurfing can be:

We sponsored an event hosted at The Spare Room (in the Roosevelt Hotel) on Hollywood Boulevard in L. A., which supported The Hospitality Kitchen, a charity that helps California's homeless.

1 oz Barry's Irish tea (double strength)

75 oz Honey syrup

5 oz fresh lemon juice

25 oz fresh orange juice

Mix ingredients together with ice. Add a dash of angostura bitters and a dash of cardamom tincture to taste. Shake and strain over ice. Garnish with micro-planed nutmeg.

With the frivolity in full swing, our new brand ambassador Silamith Weir was on hand to serve the punch and showcase our Collection to the bar and cocktail community, who joined in the fun. Many influential mixologists really loved the brand, with the Single Malt emerging as the prominent favourite.

McIlroy and Clarke Set to Receive Honours

The Queen of England's New Years Honours List has been revealed - and has tow very familiar names on it. Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke are both being honoured for their services to sport.

Both golfers have had a remarkable 2011. McIlroy won the US Open in April after displaying an astounding level of talent and focus throughout the tournament. He is the youngest person to have won in 88 years and will be honoured with an MBE.

'It is quite humbling to be included in such a list of worthy recipients. Many people on the honours list have made huge personal sacrifices and contributed significantly to society during their lives. I feel very fortunate to be in their company'

Robinson Surfs into the History Books Off The Irish Coast

We've just found images of the largest wave to be recorded off the Irish coast. A major Atlantic swell produced a wave of 20.4m during a week of stormy weather and rough seas at Mullaghmore Head. An M4 weather buoy recorded this record-breaking size last Tuesday.

But while this would be bad news for most of the country, Jayce Robinson, a professional surfer and former top Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) European junior took to the waters to ride the biggest waves Ireland has seen.

'It was definitely the biggest barrel I've ever surfed. I was a little nervous but didn't have tome to think about it' (Jayce Robinson)

Robinson was in Ireland training for the second annual Billabong and Monster Tow-in season, but turned out to be making history off of Ireland's coast. But the record-breaking stormy conditions meant that Robinson was came away with a dislocated knee:

'I was only on it for about 20 seconds, then the lip just hit me straight in the back and I went down. It's like being in a washing machine and i felt my limbs get pulled all over the place'

But like the Men of Action our brand celebrates, this injury isn't going to put him off and he's already thinking about future trips to Ireland to experience these one-of-a-kind waves.

'The waves are just amazing and world-class here at this time of year... the Wipeout is not going to hold me back, that's for sure. As soon as my knee is better I will be back out there'

The BBC Good Food Show Winter, November 2011

We've just got back from the BBC Good Food Show, which took place in Birmingham, UK.

The NEC was packed full of people on the hunt for something new, something different and something to help fill those Christmas stockings.

The show opened on Wednesday and offered the best in fine foods and drinks to guests from all over the UK. In between cooking competitions and presentations on the theatre stages, consumers were able to explore the sprawling alleyways of exquisite independent products. And that's where they found The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey* - at stand T64.

Although some familiar faces dropped by, who we met at the BBC Good Food Summer Show (in June), for many experiences what The Wild Geese had to offer was something new.

Our promoter, Kate, was an instant hit and her enthusiasm for The Wild Geese was shared by the people we met.

By Friday, the carpets were blocked out by the pulsating crowds - everyone excited to find something new.

Nick Wykees, our mixologist was also on hand to demonstrate the versatility of The Wild Geese, and mixed up some cocktails recipes which emphasised the Untamed nature of The Wild Geese Rare Irish Whiskey and The Wild Geese Golden Rum.

Thanksgiving 2011

Thanksgiving has become a intricate part of life in the United States. It's a time to look around oneself and appreciate all that one has achieved and been blessed with.

During one of the earliest Thanksgiving celebrations in 1619, Captain John Woodlief held a service in thanks that his emigrated settlers had reached North America safely. It was a time to consider the opportunities that lay ahead of them in the New World.

Nearly 400 years later, the United States has become one of the most prominent countries in the world. Americans across the country will be celebrating how far they have come in only 400 hundred years.

For us, this is also a time to consider the incredible impact Wild Geese have had on the US over the centuries. Millions of Irish people have arrived on the shores of the US. No other country has received more of The Wild Geese than America and no ethnic group had a greater impact on the history of the USA.

Eight of the fifty-six delegate signatories of the United States Declaration of Independence were of Irish descent. They fought for a beautiful dream - Freedom for Everyone.

Known for their hard-working ethic and community spirit, Wild Geese of all generations have helped to build the great nation which we know today.

To mark the Holiday Season, we're put together a recipe for a refreshing party paunch.

Ireland Qualify for Euro 2012!

After beating Estonia on aggregate, the Irish national football will be heading to the UEFA European Championship next year.

Ireland's battle with Estonia took place over two matches. The first was hosted in Tallinn last Friday (11/11/11), where Ireland emerged with an impressive 4-0 victory. The second match took place in Dublin this past Tuesday (15/11/11).

In a packed Aviva Stadium, Stephen Ward secured a goal in the 31st minute. Although it looked like Ireland's European campaign was a sure thing, Estonia battled back with a goal from captain Konstantin Vassiljev.

But as the whistle blew at full time, Ireland were through to Euro 2012 with a victory of 5-1 (on aggregate).

'It's a historic moment. it's been a long 16 months but we're extremely happy... We deserved it and we'll celebrate for sure'

This is the first time Ireland have qualified for a major championship tournament in 10 years. The last time they featured in the European Championships was 1988! So there's plenty of reason to celebrate last Tuesday's very important victory, and the energy and motivation for next year's tournament is already building.

Men of Action Take to the Sky

Check out these images from Tyler Roemer, a photographer who specialises in Outdoor Adventure.

His latest task as been to ascend Mount Hood at Timberline Ski Resort in Oregon, US, with a group of professional skiers. At more than 3,350m (11,000ft) the skiers performed stunts as they glided above the clouds, allowing Roemer to capture some heavenly images.

Tyler Roemer 'strives to get off the beaten path by using his extensive knowledge in the outdoor field to get him the next shot'. These latest images combine a sublime elegance with the raw excitement of extreme sports.

'The snow conditions, weather and light were perfect fr shooting and jumping that evening so we decided to try taking a pictures'

Making Waves - A New World Record

Take a look at this video! On a huge 90ft wave, you can just make out the silhouette of Garrett McNamara who broke a world record for the biggest wave ever surfed.

'It was only when I got in the wave that I saw the size. I was in awe.'

With the wave collapsing just behind him, this Man of Action beat the previous world record, set by Mike Parsons in Cortes Bay, California when he surfed a 77ft wave in 2008.

A native to Hawaii, McNamara was invited to Nazaré in Portugal for a big wave competition. There is an underwater canyon 1,000 ft deep, which causes some of the largest waves in the world.

There certainly is an element of danger, as the position of the canyon - which runs from the ocean to the coast - means that waves often break very close to shore.

What's extraordinary is that this was a spontaneous decision. Garrett had originally only agreed to tow a friend, Andre Cotton, out but as the waves grew bigger and bigger he decided to take it one step further.

'When we got round to the break it did seem big but I was just going to tow Andrew. But we still weren't expecting much. I didn't feel so good. Then the other guys were saying you've got to go. You've got to go and - boom! - I was on the rope and on a giant wave.'

But they say actions speak louder than words - so its worth going back and watching that again....

First Irish Heritage Certificate Awarded to 9/11 Hero

The Wild Geese Collection has been established to celebrate the Diaspora that has stretched from Ireland to all corners of the earth. Since 1691, Irish men and woman have left their home and faced new challenges. They have wielded together an ongoing story of courage and diversity.

This week, the first Certificate of Irish Heritage has been awarded posthumously Joseph Hunter - a New York City fireman who worked hard to save people from the South Tower of the 9/11 attacks.

Joseph Hunter was last seen heading towards the South Tower with Squad 288 from Queens, New York City. He epitomises the strength and courage of Men of Action.

Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamon Gilmore, presented the Certificate to Joseph's family at Maspeth Fire Station in Queens:

'Generations of Irish have been proud and privileged to serve with New York's finest - in the Fire Department, the NYPD and other emergency services.'

'We in Ireland felt the pain and loss of all Americans in the obscenity of 9/11 but we felt and particular pain in our hearts for those brave men and women of Irish heritage who lost their lives on that day'

'Joe ended up losing his life in the Twin Towers, attempting to save the lives of others... I don't think there is anybody more fitting to get the first Certificate of Irish Heritage than somebody who made such a sacrifice'

Joseph Hunter's heroic story featured in an RTE radio documentary called 'Still Waiting for Joe', which was broadcast toward the end of August. After listening to this radio show, it was decided that Joesph Hunter become the first recipient of the Certificate of Irish Heritage.

'Joseph was very proud of his Irish roots and in continuing the brave and selfless tradition of service given by the Irish to the FDNY... He would have been very honoured to receive the first certificate'

The certificate was first suggested by Ireland's Ambassador to Washington Michael Collins as means to strengthen the relationships between Ireland and some 70 million people of Irish descent in the world.

Ireland has always recognised its descendants and The Wild Geese Collection regularly celebrates the remarkable achievements of Wild Geese all over the world. For many, this certificate will officially symbolise their ancestry and remind them of the intrepid story that are a part of.

From the end of September, will start issuing the certificates to the public. Each Certificate costs $60 and must be verified by at least one ancestor from Ireland.

Here are some more photos from our event at The Savoy Taylor's Guild. We were supporting a charity event, in aide of the Kids Company charity.

The evening included an exclusive tasting of The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey Collection*, which has recently been voted 'Best Irish Whiskey' for the third time. Guests were invited to enter a prize draw, where prizes included a weekend at St. Andrews Golf Resort and a bottle of our super premium Irish Whiskey.

The Savoy's Taylor's Guild on The Strand is the flagship store. It offers specialist suiting services and a mezzanine floor with access to unique collections. The evening saw 50 guests attend the event, many of which continued on to the West End to enjoy London's theatre offerings.

The proved very successful. The Wild Geese Rare Irish Whiskey was very popular and was a great introduction for those who were new to drink whiskey.

Jackie O: Doing It On Her Own Terms

UNTAMED has a very important meaning to The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey Collection*. it was an intrinsic attribute of The Wild Geese, who pursued a dream of freedom. When they left Ireland they were untamed and walked their own path.

Tape recordings have recently been released of an intimate interview with former US First lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis. 'Jackie O' became a 1960s icon, and for a time was responsible for guiding the US nation as it mourned the assassination of her husband John F. Kennedy.

Her style and manner were iconic of 1960s America - always the superbly dressed hostess. But Jackie O was certainly more than this, and during her short time as the First Lady, she evolved the role beyond the President's wife. Although not a politician herself, she found herself at the heart of politics during a critical time and offered a level of compassion needed during the brewing Cold War.

During a visited from Nikita Krushchev, the Soviet leader was asked to shake President Kennedy's hand for a photo opportunity. Familiar with Jackie O's hospitality, he simply said 'I'd like to shake her hand first'. It seemed that although she wasn't a political figure - diplomacy was second nature to her and she elevated the job of the First Lady.

This has resonated well after her death, as the current First Lady Michelle Obama has been thrust into the public view and echoes the manner of Jackie Kennedy.

The recent tapes - recorded by her friend and historian Arthur Schlesinger - were only to be released after her death, and offer an insight into this fascinating woman and the era she lived in. some of the recordings have revealed shocking revelations, particularly her opinions of Martin Luther King Jr. and Franklin D. Roosevelt. But nevertheless, these are her own thoughts - the thoughts of a woman who many underestimated.

Although sometimes shocking, the last interview with Jackie Kennedy about her time in a heavy political atmosphere reaffirms the values she took to and from the Whitehouse.

'She was often underestimated' said historian Sally Bedall (talking to NPR's Neal Conan), 'she was a far more intelligent, original, creative person than many people gave her credit for'.

The tapes show the enduring love she had for John F. Kennedy. When the US was faced with the Cuban missile Crisis in 1962, Jackie was not evacuated like many other politicians wives. She stayed by the side of the President because that's where she felt she belonged.

Jackie O could play the perfect hostess to leaders across the world, but would not be tamed by the role. She called the world as she saw it, recognising and disagreeing with the hypocrisy of a fully politicised world. But, perhaps more importantly she knew the time and place to speak her mind - and dedicated herself not only to serving the US in a fragile time, but also to building a family, a legacy, that stills runs strong today.

On Thursday The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey supported The Fairmont Group and Moss Bros during a charity event to raise awareness of Kids Company - an organisation that works to improve the lives of neglected inner-city children.

Taking place in the Savoy's Tailor's Guild, we met many new faces - some were seasoned whiskey drinkers, others were new to the whiskey experience. Either way, The Wild Geese had a very warm reception.

The Wild Geese Rare Irish Whiskey was definitely a hit. The Rare Irish is a fundamental ingredient in our cocktail recipe, so this gives us a perfect opportunity to unveil some of our cocktails at future events.

Men of Courage

This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Taking some time to remember this event is extremely important, as this single event has shaped the world today.

2,996 lives were lost on 11th September 2001 and over 6,000 people were injured. The aftermath has been mix of anger and sadness, tragedy and reflection; and in the discourse this event has seen many villains come to light. But there have also been heroes - those who have strived to help and establish peace once again.

9/11 in effect took place in the public eye. In the age of digital media and 24 hour news networks, it felt like every second was captured. The dramatic images of the smoking World Trade Centre have certainly shocked the 21st Century. But juxtaposed to this were the images of the survivors and emergency services offered a flicker of hope amongst such chaos.

The emergency services were extraordinary. They worked around the clock to save lives and attend to the injured, displaying remarkable bravery.

Since 9/11 countless stories have emerged giving even further insight into the events of that day. One has been posted on The Telegraph's website:

Bob Beckwith was a retired New York Fireman. At the time, he was 69, but after seeing the devastation on TV, he decided that he had to do something.

'I went down the next morning, dressed in my old uniform. There was a ring of cops and a ring of National Guard. I had to persuade both to let me through'

Although sometimes it can be hard to see the glimmer of hope that exists in such a crisis, 10 years on, as the dust has cleared, it is the heroes of 9/11 we are thinking of, as well as those who lost their lives. If anything can be learned from 9/11, it's that compassion has not been eradicated and is perhaps stronger than ever.

2011 A Landmark Year for U2

London played host to the GQ Men of The Year Awards on Tuesday night. The UK edition of the men's lifestyle magazine collects together inspirational figures in the public eye each year and promises equal measure of style and excitement. And 2011's ceremony didn't disappoint.

U2 were awarded the 'Best Band' gong, topping a year which has seen the Irish band become even more colossal. Prior to 2011, the band has already been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2005) and Rolling Stone Magazine has named them one of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'.

But 2011 saw the band's 360 Degree tour became the highest grossing tour in history, which began back in 2009. The tour travelled to Europe, North America, South America and Africa.

All too often, awards are handed out to bands without considering why they received it. In this case, U2's global appeal have inspired people all over the world, since the 1980s.

Fellow musician Chris Martin (from Coldplay) recognised this. Writing for Rolling Stone, he discussed the significance of U2:

'There are only a few people around brave enough to talk out... who use their fame in a good way. While everyone else was swearing at George Bush, Bono was the one who rubbed Bush'd back and got a billion dollars for Africa.'

'When the time came for Coldplay to think about fair trade, we took his lead to speak out regardless of what anyone may think. That's what we've learned from U2: You have to be brave enough to be yourself.'

Wild Geese Are Still Returning To Ireland

Ireland's tourism figures have risen over the last year.

Ireland's Central Statistics Office recently announced that in the first 6 months of 2011, almost 3 million visitors arrived through Irish airports and ports. This is an increase from 2.6 million in 2010, confirming 'a more positive picture overall than this time last year'.

When they left Ireland in 1691, Patrick Sarsfield and his followers took the name 'Wild Geese' - as a reminder of their homeland. They one day hoped to return to Ireland, just as wild geese do. But many of them - including Sarsfield - would not see Ireland again. Instead, they settled in communities all over the world. These recent figures are a reminder of this and it is touching to see the hopes and dreams of The Wild Geese are still alive - people are still 'returning home to Ireland'.

Although 2010 was plagued by the closure of European airspace as a result of the Icelandic volcano, Ireland has hosted some very important visits this year - from Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II - each of which attracted a global audience, and have resulted in a rise in tourism.

The recent figures have also solidified the relationship between Ireland and the US. Visitors from the United States have increased by 17% with 462, 400 more visitors in the first half of this year.

During his visit in May, US President Barack Obama spoke about the bond between the US and the country of his ancestry:

'This little country that inspires the biggest triumphs - - in America and Ireland alike - - are still to come'

With Ireland's tourism industry facing a new prosperity, there have been discussions to open up new routes to Ireland from the US, making it easier for people on the West Coast to visit the home of their ancestors.

George Clooney's Most Promising Role

George Clooney has recently halted all rumours suggesting that he may run for the US Presidency. Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, where he is showcasing his latest film 'Ides of March', Clooney acknowledged the difficulties that the role brings.

'I have a very good job. So, I have no interest'

Clooney is no shrinking violet when it comes to political issues. Although he may not be destined for the Whitehouse, Clooney has not shied away from a fight for change. He is renowned for his humanitarian efforts, just as much as he is for his Hollywood roles.

As one of the most prominent figures of Hollywood's Irish Love Affair - his great great grandparents emigrated from Ireland and settled in the US - Clooney has exploited his celebrity status to put change into action. George Clooney publicly supported Barack Obama's Presidential campaign and has since discussed important issues thats are close to his heart with the President. He has significantly involved himself in bringing the Darfur conflict and its resulting atrocities to light, making several documentaries to better inform western audiences. With his fellow Ocean's 11 cast members he helped to establish the Not On Our Watch organisation that works to end global atrocities such as those in Darfur.

His involvement with sensitive issues have prompted the rumours of Clooney running for Washington, and many have suggested that he could be the Democrats' answer to Ronald Reagan. But although Clooney has played many roles in his career, 'President' does not seem to be one of them.

Instead, he continues his most recurring role - 'The Idealist', 'The Hopeful'. Speaking about Ides of March, Clooney outlined the political atmosphere as he sees it - filled with cynicism - but he insists this will not last forever.

'It's temporary, it always is. Cynicism seems to be winning over idealism right now but I hope that will change soon'

Although this context refers to the US Political scope, this is an opinion that George Clooney has displayed in his attitude and actions. Remembering The Princess of Wales

Today we remember Diana, Princess of Wales. She tragically died on the 31st August 1997.

She was perhaps the most scrutinised woman of the 20th Century, as press from all over the world ferociously fought over the latest image or scandal. This put the Princess of Wales in a catch 22 situation. Caught between an everyday woman and a princess, mother and style icon, homemaker and celebrity; Diana became a unique global icon, marrying the romance of a fairytale lifestyle, with respectfully raising two children. This lead to worldwide appeal to know every detail about the complicated Princess of Wales.

But beyond the sparkling celebrity and painful controversies that surrounded Diana, what we remember about her is her enormous generosity and compassion. She worked tirelessly to better this world and used her influential position to improve the lives of those less fortunate.

Queen of Hearts

As part of her royal duties, Diana frequently visited hospitals and scheduled public appearances to support various charities. During this time, the Princess of Wales' compassion grew, and her interest in serious illness lead her to perform duties that were outside expectations. She soon championed campaigns to highlight AIDS and Leprosy, which were devastating the third world.

In her home country, she became patroness of charities and organisations that worked with the homeless and drug addicts, crossing the broad class distance to truly make a difference. From 1989, Diana was the President of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.

In the year of her death, the Princess of Wales displayed an intensely public support towards the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Focusing her work in regions that had recently suffered conflict, Diana was concerned that these brutal weapons remained active even after a war had passed, and was becoming an increasing risk to innocent lives - especially children. She worked to pass the Ottawa Treaty. which would impose an international ban on the use of anti-personnel landmines. Although she never saw the acceptance of the Treaty, the UN appealed to nations that produced and stockpiled landmines to agree to the terms of the Treaty and move a step closer to extinguishing the risk of landmines. The campaign received a Nobel Peace Prize and 156 countries signed the Ottawa Treaty.

Diana's compassionate works remain helped to define her character, and this compassion lives on today.

Hollywood's Love Affair

Ireland has always had a love affair with Hollywood. It is a modern day chapter of The Wild Geese Story.

Talent has flocked from Ireland to carve out a career in California. The Golden Age of Hollywood saw the rise of George Brent (1899-1979), a 'dark haired charmer', left Ireland in 1925 and headed to the US. He started touring with production companies, performing across many different states and eventually appearing on Broadway alongside Clark Gable in 'Love, Honour, and Betray'.

In 1930 Brent moved to Hollywood and starred in his first film 'Under Suspicion', starting an extremely rich career. His most frequent co-star was Bette Davis and the two maintained a very close relationship, even up to his death in 1979. George Brent brought the romantic charisma of Ireland to the big screen, and captivated audiences of his age. However, he was was only the first part of this love affair.

In recent years, other stars from Ireland have resonated on the silver screen. Liam Neeson, Collin Farrell and Pierce Brosnan have now become established actors, recognised throughout the world. But a new wave of Irish actors is fast approaching and leading the way is Michael Fassbender, who has brought the appealing traits of George Brent to twenty-first century audiences.

Fassbender currently lives in LA - a sensible decision as he's currently working Hollywood blockbuster Promethus - but has an exciting heritage. Fassbender was born in Heidelber in Germany to a German father and Irish mother, but his family moved to Killarney, Co. Kerry.

'We moved to Ireland when I was two and we settled in Killarny, Co. Kerry. Where we were living in Germany is very industrial and grey and my parents wanted to have countryside around for my sister and I to grow up in'

He's quickly building a reputation has bringing sensitivity to the roles he plays, while also keeping them exciting and often on the fringe of hero and villain. He is perhaps at his best playing the Byronic hero Mr Rochchester in Jane Eyre .

Fassbender's Irish accent also nearly stole the show in X-Men: First Class, in his dynamic turn as the troubled Magneto. But it was Fassbender's brave portrayal of Bobby Sands, who led the Irish Hunger Strike in 1891, that proved to be a turning point in his career. A sensitive role, Fassbender went through a crash diet and restricted himself to only 600 calories per day. The performance really opened audiences eyes to just what Fassbender could do. He received the award for Best Performance by an actor in a British Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards.

Already been dubbed 'an Irish Marlon Brando', its been a long journey from Ireland to Hollywood - taking numerous television roles and even working in a pub while times were hard - but it seems Michael Fassbender has finally arrived, and he's brought with him the remarkable creativity of Ireland.

Fassbender likes to return to Ireland when he gets the opportunity - 'Usually I get back around three times a year'. Back in 1691, Sarsfield and his followers took the name 'Wild Geese' as they left their homeland, hoping that one day they would return to Ireland. Its great to see that the call to home is still a powerful force.

Ireland's Highest Goalscorer Joins LA Galaxy

Irish footballer Robbie Keane has recently joined Major League Soccer in the US, signing with the renowned LA and scoring in his debut match - helping to ensure a victory for his new team.

Robbie Keane is Ireland's all-time record goalscorer, having become the first Irish player to score fifty international goals in June 2011. In high demand, LA Galaxy ensured they made room for him, trading Juan Pablo Angel and signing Keane on August 15th 2011. Keane took Angel's places as one of LA Galaxy's 'designated players'. The 'designated players rule' allows Major League Soccer Franchises to sign players that would usually be outside of the MLS salary cap. LA Galaxy's other 'designated players' are David Beckham and Landon Donovan.

Upon signing, Keane admitted, 'I have always wanted to come and play in Major League Soccer', and is proving the story of The Wild Geese continues today. As the captain of the Irish national team, Keane is in a position to inspire those around him. Already proving he is a world-class footballers, fans in LA Galaxy have been excited about his arrival. The 27, 000 capacity Home Depot Stadium in California sold out for his debut match on August 20th 2011. Ireland's colours were on show and traditional Irish dancers performed for the packed stadium before the match started.

Fans were anticipating what Keane could do.

Keane didn't disappoint. In his debut match, he scored the opening goal in the twenty-first minute, helping to secure a 2-0 victory for LA Galaxy against the San Jose Earthquakes. Robbie Keane is a testament to the continuing story of The Wild Geese - achieving remarkable feats away from his homeland.

Honouring a Menacing Journey

This week, Sizewell Beach, on the British coast saw the arrival of a group of fundraisers who had spent forty hours kayaking from the Netherlands to the UK.

A group of six - Alex Greenwell, Ed Cooper, Harry Franks, Olly Hicks and brother Henri and William Peteri - attempted to cross the North Sea in kayaks, following the same trail as 32 young Dutchmen had done 70 years ago, in an attempt to flee Nazi-occupid Holland.

The Dutchmen who braved the original trip - known as 'Engelandvaarders' - tried to get to the shores of the UK to subsequently join the war effort against the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy and Japan). Not only did they face unpredictable weather conditions, the North Sea was also heavily mined. But, echoing Patrick Sarsfield's story, these courageous Men of Action wanted to escape oppression and have the opportunity to help secure freedom for their country.

Although only eight of the original Engelandvaarders survived the menacing journey, this recent fundraising event is testament to the courage and dedication.

Olly Hicks admitted 'It was a really tough challenge'. These words bear extra weight when you consider that Olly was the first person to row from the US to the UK in 2005. The team faced up to force six winds and didn't sleep for two night. He continued, 'I met some of the original Engelandvaarders in Holland and it's a privilege to do this in their honour'.

Raising thousands of pounds for the Suffolk Foundation, which is an independent grant maker for local charities, and Combat Stress, a leading organisation for the care of soldier's mental health, the recreation took forty hours.

The courage and dedication shown by both the original Engelandvaarders and the men who recreated the journey are qualities shared by The Wild Geese - and what out Collection of Irish Whiskeys celebrates.

The Siege of Limerick

The Battle of Aughrim in 1691 devastated the Jacobite army. Four thousand lives were lost, including the commanding officer the Marquis de St. Ruth. But determined to fight on for their freedom, Patrick Sarsfield oversaw the retreat to Limerick.

Limerick was a stronghold, still in the hands of the Irish Jacobite forces. It had withstood a siege a year before, in which Sarsfield planned a daring mission to destroy a siege train that carried heavy weapons that could breach the town's walls. But morale was low and the Jacobite forces were crumbling. As the Williamite army blockaded Limerick, the hope of securing civil liberties for the Irish people starting to fade. The French commanders who Sarsfield served under refused to retreat, but having been abandoned by King James, Sarsfield subverted the commanders and negotiated peace for his people - and began talks for the Treaty of Limerick.

Freedom

In the Treaty, Sarsfield tried to secure the safety of the civilians living in Limerick as well as their guaranteed freedom. Patrick Sarsfield and The Wild Geese fought passionately for these liberties believing that every person had the right to enjoy them. This is why each bottle of The Wild Geese carries a commemorative '1691' medallion - the Collection celebrates the Men of Action who fought to uphold this freedom.

But when Sarsfield and The Wild Geese chose to leave Ireland, they also sparked an intrepid story, that is still very much alive to this day. Wild Geese all over the world have had a remarkable impact on the world. Our Collection of Irish Whiskeys, which have been recognised as 'Best Irish Whiskey' on three occasions within twelve months, continues to celebrate this.

In March of this year US President Barack Obama planned a 'homecoming visit' to Ireland, to trace his own Irish roots. In an address to an excited crowd in Dublin, the President echoed the story of Sarsfield and The Wild Geese:

'Remember that whatever hardships the winter may bring, springtime is always just around the corner. And if they keep on arguing with you, just respond with a simple creed: Is Feidir Linn - Yes We Can'

Sarsfield is remembered as a prominent figure - a hero - in Ireland, particularly in Limerick where appropriately a bridge has been named after him, which leads onto Sarsfield Street.

Educated at a French Military, it is thought that Sarsfield was always prepared to take action - preferring to face daring pursuits in battle, rather than plan strategic campaigns of war. This passion burned in him throughout his military career. He first saw service in the army of Luxembourg as an ensign, and served in the army of King Louis XIV of France between 1671-1678.

When James II ascended to the English throne in 1685, Sarsfield served under the King's commander in Ireland, Richard Talbot. Although James II recognised Sarsfield's raw courage, he didn't think that he was capable of high command or initiating strategies of war.

Nevertheless Sarsfield served with distinction in the Williamite War. In 1690, Sarsfield served under St. Ruth, who he often disagreed with. But when St. Ruth fell in battle, Sarsfield ordered a hasty retreat. Unable to turn the tide of the battle, Sarsfield organised a strategic retreat - saving many of the men who served under him.

He continued the war effort, by leading the defence of the Second Siege of Limerick. Faced with escalating odds, and realising that many more lives would be lost in a prolonged campaign, Sarsfield negotiated the Treaty of Limerick. In the Treaty, he ended the war and secured the rights of his people.

The Wild Geese

But Sarsfield was unable to live under English rule. With many of his followers he boarded ships bound for France, and left Ireland believing he had ensured freedom for the people he had fought for. Taking the name 'Wild Geese', Sarsfield and his followers believed that one day they would enjoy this freedom in their homeland.

Unfortunately the Treaty was not honoured by the English and Sarsfield served in European armies for the following three years. While fighting for King Louis XIV he received a Meréchal-de-camp (lieutenant-general commission), but was badly wounded in the Battle of Landen. Taken back to Huy, Belgium, Sarsfield did not recover from his injury and died three days later.

It is thought that upon examining his bloody wound, and realising that he may soon die, his last words were 'Oh if only this were for Ireland'. Sarsfield was buried in Huy, in St. Martin's Church. Although is body was laid to rest in Belgium, it is clear that his heart belonged in Ireland.

Inspiring Display of Freedom

Michael Fishbach regularly scouts the Sea of Cortez in the Gulf of California. A hotspot for whales, he spends two months of every year photographing them. Familiar with these mighty creatures, on Valentines Day in 2011, Michael came across a humpback whale caught in some finishing nets and quickly took action, mounting a rescue effort that lasted well over an hour.

'It took some effort to stay focused given the great emotion of the moment. The sight of this large and beautiful creature trapped and so close to death was almost overwhelming'

Calling for help from ashore wasn't an option, as time was precious. Choosing to act there and then, Michael and his companions were faced with the challenging task of not only freeing the whale, but trying to keep the humpback calm.

Michael had to get into the water to evaluate the situation. 'A I swam along side the animal, our eyes met. There were no words we could share, but I wanted to let the whale know we were here to help'.

'I must admit,' Michael explained 'I was a bit scared because I knew the whale was frightened and fatigued, but could kill me with one panicked movement... the situation was bleak'.

But Michael and his companions persevered, and steadily cut free the humpback's pectoral fins. At one point, sensing freedom, the whale powered through the sea, dragging Michael's boat behind her. In order to free the creature, they needed to release the netting which stifled her tale. This courageous rescue was caught on camera, what followed was extraordinary.

The display that followed the rescue shows us the value of Men of Action, who work hard to make a difference. Michael Fishback and his companions couldn't wait for help, and their decision to take action meant that this ocean giant was free once again.

'We all believed it was a how of pure joy if not thanks... We were all proud and thrilled that we saved this fantastic young life'.

Battalón de San Patricio: Battles and Legacy

The American-Mexican war intertwined the Mexican and Irish nations.

Faced with the marching US army, Mexico recruited people from nations far and wide, inviting them to join their fight for freedom.

This call resulted in people from nations all over the world joining the Mexican army - primarily Irish and German immigrants and African Americans.

The 'Legion of Foreigners' was quickly established and fought in the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. Simultaneously, Jon Riley and manned Mexican artillery at the Siege of Fort Texas with other Irish deserters. These two groups then came together at the Battle of Monterrey on September 21st 1846, under the name Battalón de San Patricio.

Beginning

During the battle, the Battalion provided artillery support for the Mexican army. Proving to be the backbone of the Mexican artillery efforts, the Battalion rapidly grew in numbers following the battle - inspiring fellow immigrants to join the Mexicans' cause.

On February 23rd, the San Patricios were given the three heaviest cannons to man in the Battle of Buena Vista. Positioned overlooking the battlefield, the Battalion began the battle by firing on US infantry and soon destroyed an artillery battery directly opposite.

Evolving

The Patricios started to get ambitious. A small company was dispatched to capture the an American cannon, which was far better designed. Relentless in this pursuit, the company battled US artillerymen hand to hand and hauled away two six-pound cannons, which would be used by the Mexican army in later battles - such as the Battle of Contreras, where they covered a Mexican retreat. After this battle, many Irishmen were awarded the War Cross and given field promotions.

Their Last Breath

The Battalion's final battle was fought at Churubusco - a vital strategic holding for the Mexican army. If Churubusco fell to the US, the War would quickly be over. The San Patricios used between three and five heavy cannons to hold off advancing US troops. As the battle raged on and the Mexican ammunition ran low, chaos quickly ensued and the Mexican lines were broken. The battle was nearing its end, and Mexican troops began raising white flags. But for the San Patricios, defeat would not only cost them the war, but may also cost them their lives. They passionately continued to fighting, preventing others from surrendering and engaging the US army hand to hand, willing to dedicate their last breath to this dream of freedom.

However, as the chaos erupted further, the remaining San Patricios raised the white flag and accepted their fate. Once again their future was no longer in their own hands.

Legacy

Those who were not killed in battle marched to trials. The punishment for deserters was death by hanging, which most of the San Patricios were sentenced to. Although they never knew the freedom they fought for - much like Patrick Sarsfield - the San Patricios have been remembered by Mexico. Streets, plazas and public buildings have been named after them. The Battlion's name is also written in gold letters in the chamber of Mexico's House of Representatives and both Ireland and Mexico have jointly issued commemorative stamps in honour of the Battalion.

Crossing America in 100 Days

This week Mark Allison completed a run across North America. Leaving Huntington Beach in California in May, Mark ran 3,100 miles across 13 states, finishing in New York on Tuesday. He ran an average of 30 miles a day, and crossed a variety of terrain including up to 46C (115F) desert heat and freezing snow - all within 100 days!

'It was amazing. I did a sprint finish, though I'm not sure how. I couldn't feel my legs at the end'

The backdrops for Mark's run included: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

'Week after week the following I have on Twitter had increased. When you are doing so many miles alone in the middle of nowhere it's really encouraging to know there are so many people out there sending messages of support'

The level of support is not surprising. Dedicating the run to his mother, father and brother, Mark has raised a very impressive £74,000 which will be given to his local St. Benedict's Hospice and The Children's Foundation. Both dedication and generosity - a great example of a Man of Action.

'... the amount that has been raised for the two charities is way beyond my wildest dreams...I would have felt I had let people down if I hadn't achieved what I wanted to'

Father of The Battallón de San Patricio: Jon Riley

The Story of The Wild Geese is timeless. A search for Freedom.

This was certainly true of the Irish emigrants of the 1840s who travelled to North American searching for Freedom from oppression and hardship. However, upon arrival on the continent, it quickly became apparent that their dream of freedom was far from a reality.

Faced with a nativist ideology in North America, many Irish immigrants were ghettoised and treated poorly by their new nation. But for many, the American Army offered a chance to pursue freedom and integrate into a new community. Among them was Jon Riley, who joined the army in the hopes of fighting the British. But, like Patrick Sarsfield, Riley was soon faced with a stark choice. With an impending invasion of Mexico by North America, Riley chose to abandon his army post and joined the Mexicans in their struggle for Freedom.

Call To Arms

Born in County Galway in 1818, Riley emigrated to North America in 1843 - landing in Michigan already an experienced soldier and artilleryman. His artillery skills were desperately needed by the Mexican army and quickly shone in battle, providing vital support for the Mexican forces.

It was then decided that the Mexican army should establish a foreign battalion, which Riley would lead. He soon made the famous flag of the Battallón de San Patricio - which had 'Erin Go Bragh' (Ireland Forever) written across it - and the Battalion grew in numbers as more and more joined their campaign for freedom.

At the close of the war, many of the San Patricios were tried as deserters to the US army and hanged. Riley was not among them, however, and was imprisoned. He was tormented with lashings and branded with a 'D' on both of his cheeks, marking his decision to dessert the US army. Eventually, he was released from prison and allowed to live in the country he fought for.

Although it's tragic that Riley never truly knew the freedom he sought, his actions have been honoured in both Ireland and Mexico. Mexico produced a bronze statue commemorating the Battallón de San Patricio, which it gave to Ireland as a gift. This has been placed in Cliften, Co. Galway - the birthplace of the San Patricios' leader.

Ireland has seen many waves of migration since 1691. 'The Wild Geese' who left their homes over the centuries were faced with an uncertain future, but chose to take control of their own lives and shape their own destiny.

A very important chapter in the story of The Wild Geese took place in Mexico in the 1840s. Over a million people emigrated from Ireland to America between 1840-1850. Escaping the infamous famine, these people sought new opportunities, and many joined the American army. However, when they were faced with an invasion of Mexico, a group of Irish soldiers - led by a man named Jon Riley - joined the Mexican army to aid in the country's struggle for freedom.

They formed The Battalón de San Patricio - 'Saint Patrick's Battalion'. Comprised of primarily Irish and German immigrants, and African American slaves the Battalion sympathised with the struggle of Mexico, coming together in the hope of securing Freedom.

The Battalón de San Patricio flew a green flag, which read 'Erin Go Bragh' - which means 'Ireland Forever' - as they marched towards the battle field, keeping their homeland close to their hearts and igniting the fire that had started over a century before hand by Patrick Sarsfield.

Although The Wild Geese contributed to many communities across the world, their Irish identity is part of the heart of the story. It came to embody their hopes and dreams, and sparked a culture that can be found in many different countries.

Literature has been a significant part of Irish identity for centuries, and the international fascination with the literature that has been inspired by Ireland continues to this day.

At the Bumbershoot Festival this year - which takes place in Seattle, Washington on Labor Day weekend - a group of three contemporary Irish writers will be discussing 'how the romanticism and legend of Dublin has impacted their own writing'.

Chris Binchy, Kevin Holohan and Claire Kilroy will all come together on September 5th. All three currently live in Dublin, and the city is woven into many of their works - in some cases becoming such a prominent backdrop that the capital is anthropomorphised into a multi-layered character of its own.

Chris Binchy used his experiences as a chef to build up a working Dublin with many different faces in The Very Man:

'For him the flush, self-regarding Dublin in that novel can be compared to a restaurant - "Front of house is air-conditioned, perfumed and glitzy, but behind the scenes it's greasy, 35 degrees"'

Although The Wild Geese dreamed of returning to Ireland, in a sense, they brought the cultural influence of the country with them. Living in contemporary Dublin is a prevalent experience for writers and images of the city can clearly inform their writing, and fuels the fascination with Irish culture that began after the migration of 1691.

The UltraMarathon Man

It's very hard to label Dean Karnazes as anything but a 'Man of Action'. It is astounding to read about some of the feats he has achieved, which caught our eye this week in the UK's Metro. He reminded us of The Wild Geese, who turned away from oppression in 1691, leaving Ireland in the hope of Freedom. In their pursuit, they accomplished some extraordinary things in communities throughout the world.

Karnazes has pushed the limits of his body, discovering that he was capable of. In 2004 he won the Badwater Basin, which is a 135 mile course that includes an extremely tough elevation. It's described as 'the most demanding and extreme running race offered' starting at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in the Western hemisphere at 280' (85m) below sea level; and finishing at the Mt. Whitney Portals at nearly 8,300' (2530m). But this is only a drop in the ocean of challenges Karnazes has placed in front of him.

In September 2006, Karnazes started a mammoth challenge - 50 marathons in 50 States on 50 consecutive days. Starting in St. Louis, and ending with the New York City Marathon in November. He completed the New York Marathon in 3 hours 30 seconds, and then decided to run home - back across the country to San Francisco. This epic journey was the subject of a 2008 film. You can take a sneak peak below. It's both touching and inspiring to see the effect Karnazes' challenges have had on people.

He decided to end his run home early, in St. Charles, Missouri so that he could spend time with his family, but took up this challenge again earlier this year. Starting at Disney World in California on February 22nd, Karnazes crossed his finish line in Manhattan, New York over two months later on May 10th.

Speaking to the Metro, Karnazes explained that he's 'curious to see what the limits of human endurance are and how far the human body can go'. He's been named as number 27 on Time Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2007 and Wired Magazine has described him as 'The Perfect Human'.

While Karnazes is certainly worthy of these accolades, we can't help but feel that they somehow miss the point. Karnazes wasn't searching for perfection (at least not originally).

'I was working as a marketing executive and felt like a caged animal. My life was boring and there were no challenges left. It was on my 30th birthday when I was drunk in a bar that I suddenly had the idea to run 30 miles to reclaim my life. So, I left the bar, took off my pants and started running in my briefs and a pair of plimsolls'.

Karnazes was in search of a sense of Freedom - the ability to choose and be in self-control - and literally chased this dream, along the way accomplishing remarkable feats and inspiring others. A true Man of Action.

A Fusion of Irish and American Culture

Flogging Molly have been included on the Lolapalooza lineup, one of the biggest festivals in the US. The band is a fusion of Irish and American culture, intertwining Irish folk with contemporary punk. You can check out the result below:

The formation of Flogging Molly is a modern chapter of The Wild Geese story. Dublin-born Dave King had already garnered considerable experience in the music industry by the time Flogging Molly formed in 1997, having previously been part of heavy metal band Fastway and hard rock band Katmandu.

King soon decided to work on a solo album, and wanted to include traditional Irish instruments to combine two starkly different sounds. King's record label did not approve of this however, and like The Wild Geese in 1691, he was forced to turn away from his record deal and go his own way, with only his passionate and innovative spirit to support him.

King soon met Bridget Regan - a fiddle player and King's future wife - Ted Hutt (guitarist) and Jeff Peters (Bassist) and began to playing traditional Irish music and rock ballads, primarily in an Irish bar in LA called Molly Malone's, where they played a weekly set.

'It's a neighbourhood pub smack in the middle of a big city. Guinness and Harp are on tap, the patrons are friendly (but sometimes dangerous), and overall, the spot is downright welcoming and cozy. In other words, it was the perfect birthplace for Flogging Molly'

Steadily gathering a strong following, the band chose a name, honouring Molly Malone's as a place where they worked exceptionally hard and discovered the kind of music they wanted to make. In 1997 Flogging Molly was born.

The band has toured the globe and are regulars on the festival circuit, their music lending itself perfectly to the fun-filled atmosphere of summertime festivals. It's inspiring that Dave King turned away from the security of a record deal, in order to make the music he wanted to - a potent characteristic of The Wild Geese.

Lollapalooza 2011

Lollapalooza is fast approaching and this year will mark twenty years of the US festival. Started in 1991, when Perry Farrell (of Jane's Addiction fame) started to organise a farewell show for his band. His inspirations quickly spiralled out of control and in the summer of 1991, the festival began touring the United States.

'From the start, Mr. Farrell wanted Lollapalooza to be not just a musical event but a cultural smorgasbord, with a diverse array of tents, booths and displays exploring a number of political, environmental, human rights and cultural issues'

As an 'Alternative Nation', Lollapalooza has included a wide variety of talent during its twenty year run. In 2005, the festival stopped touring the country and now takes place annually in the large green spaces of Chicago's Grant Park. It has since become an incredibly important part of Chicago's summer.

In April, however, Lollapalooza took an unexpected turn. As a champion of the alternative, the festival set up shop in Parque O'Higgin's (named after one of The Wild Geese - Bernardo O'Higgins) in Santiago, Chile.

Returning to Chicago between August 5-7, Lollapalooz'a line up includes Two Door Cinema Club, Imelda May and Irish-American folk rock band Flogging Molly. As one of the biggest festivals in the US, this promises to be an opportunity to see some of the world's best musicians.
