Tony McCoy has had a string of achievements. His illustrious career now includes an OBE, which he finally received twelve months after his initial invitation. The award was presented to him for his services to horse racing - a very popular sport in both Britain and Ireland.
For us, this is a time to reflect on and celebrate the successes of 'AP McCoy'. In 2010, the Sports Journalist Association voted McCoy 'Sportsman of the Year' at the British Sports Awards. This achievement marked recognition from the sports industry, the public and fellow jockeys. 'He's dominated racing' hailed Ruby Walsh, an incredibly successful jockey in his own right.
'To win this award is surreal... It's not something that anyone would be silly enough to dream about, even me' McCoy said upon accepting the award. At this point, McCoy had won the Grand National eight months previously in April and received an MBE in 2003.
But despite his successes, McCoy has maintained a consistent loyalty to his one true passion - racing. He was due to collect the OBE in November, but had to decline because he had a race 93 miles away. 'He didn't go because he was racing and that was always going to be the case. He is a racer first, that's why he is a champion jockey' said his agent Gee Armitage. McCoy's attitude and healthy dedication to his sport are testament to his humble character. They are why he is such an inspirational figure, as when you strip away the awards, his conviction remains. He is a Man of Action, just like The Wild Geese.
'It's obviously an amazing honour and something that I'm very proud of' Tony McCoy said, reflecting on his latest honour.
